Diakonia is a Christian adult education program offered in the Indiana-Kentucky Synod and other synods throughout the ELCA. Classes cover theological topics such as the Bible, Christian Ethics, Christian Doctrine, Practical Ministry and others. Together, students and teachers work to discover the richness and depth of God’s word as revealed in these disciplines.
There are currently two programs on offer in the Indiana-Kentucky Synod in North Central Indiana and the Indianapolis Conference. Classes have begun for 2017. Look below for more information.
North Central Indiana
North Central Indiana is offering courses from Series A this year:
Church History: The First 400 Years
Practical Ministry 1:Biblical Images of the Life of the Church
Lutheran Creeds and Confessions
Practical Ministry II: Visitation
The Daily Life of the Christian

The Indianapolis Diakonia program is launching a “beta” program for online learning. We would so appreciate it if you could participate in this pilot program. During this pilot, and over the next year, we’re going to be doing some research with students and local pastors to assess best meeting times/learning options, etc.
We’re including independent eLearning/remote learning to offer more flexibility to students. A number of our programs are struggling to get enough students to form classes. Our hope is that this program will assist with reaching students that may not otherwise be able to participate.
Our pilot class is the Old Testament, taught by Pastor Daniel Forehand of Elkhart, Indiana. We’re using a conferencing software called Zoom, a really neat tool in that it allows for lecture and class interaction from your home computer, smart phone, tablet. There is plenty of room for discussion using this software. And you’re able to see everyone’s face!
The commitment is for 5 weeks on Thursday evenings beginning on September 14. Classes meet from 7-10 pm EST. If you can’t begin classes on September 14, no worries! These classes are taped and those tapes will be made available to you. Typically, students can’t miss more than two classes in person. However, that will be at the discretion of Pr. Dan.
At the end of this class you will be asked for feedback on the curriculum, instructor, remote experience, course times and length. Students from any Synod across the country are welcome to sit in on this class.
